BOSTON -- Major League Baseball, the Boston Red Sox and PEOPLE magazine announced Tuesday that Lenny Moitoso of Fairfield, Conn., is the Red Sox's All-Star of the All-Stars Among Us campaign.
Moitoso will also be honored during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park on Saturday before representing the Red Sox at the All-Star Game in Anaheim on July 13.
Debuting in 2009, the campaign recognizes individuals who serve their communities in extraordinary ways. Moitoso, one of three Red Sox finalists, was chosen for his community service with Ludlowe Corps, which sends local students to developing countries to participate in health, education and environmental projects.
Moitoso's Ludlowe Corps has also raised over $100,000 for projects including distributing mosquito nets, starting a new elementary school in Senegal and helping with flood relief in Ecuador. Around 1,500 middle school students have already raised funds, and nearly 50 students have traveled to Senegal and Ecuador to participate.
Fans across the nation cast 1.7 million votes more than double the amount of votes from the previous year at PeopleAllStars.com to select the 30 All-Stars Among Us winners out of the pool of 90 finalists who are serving as leaders within their communities.
