Victor won't return when break concludes

TORONTO -- Catcher Victor Martinez and infielder Mike Lowell, who are on the 15-day disabled list, did not travel with the club to Toronto for the Red Sox's weekend series against the Blue Jays.

Manager Terry Francona addressed Martinez's situation specifically.

"He has to fly to Anaheim [on Monday for All-Star festivities], so I told him, 'I have no problem with you staying behind a couple days,;" Francona said. "He's got to take his family, and his family was going to come here -- I'm fine with it.

"When he comes back from Anaheim on Wednesday, he'll get a scan on his thumb and try to see the level of recovery where he's at there."

While the club anticipated Martinez, on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb fracture since June 27, to return right after the All-Star break, Francona said that's a bit too optimistic.

"That is not happening," Francona said. "Victor thought maybe if he got rid of the swelling, but he's still pretty sore. I don't think that's probably as realistic as we wanted it to be."
