Manager Terry Francona addressed Martinez's situation specifically.
"He has to fly to Anaheim [on Monday for All-Star festivities], so I told him, 'I have no problem with you staying behind a couple days,;" Francona said. "He's got to take his family, and his family was going to come here -- I'm fine with it.
"When he comes back from Anaheim on Wednesday, he'll get a scan on his thumb and try to see the level of recovery where he's at there."
While the club anticipated Martinez, on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb fracture since June 27, to return right after the All-Star break, Francona said that's a bit too optimistic.
"That is not happening," Francona said. "Victor thought maybe if he got rid of the swelling, but he's still pretty sore. I don't think that's probably as realistic as we wanted it to be."
