Lenny DiNardo will become latest member to take a turn on Boston's starting rotation carousel on Thursday night, when he takes the ball in the finale of a three-game series against the Orioles.
With injuries piling up, the Red Sox have used a wide variety of starters in recent weeks. This will be DiNardo's first turn in the rotation since May 21, when he strained his neck against the Phillies and missed three months of action.
This is the rubber match of this series, as Boston won the opener, but mustered just two hits in a 4-0 loss on Wednesday.
The Red Sox are 12-2 against the Orioles this season. Boston trails the Yankees by 11 1/2 games in the American League East and is eight games off the pace in the Wild Card standings.
BOS: LHP Lenny DiNardo (1-2, 7.42 ERA)
DiNardo has served as a reliever this month after being activated off the 60-day disabled list on Aug. 31. The thinking behind DiNardo re-entering the rotation is so that the Red Sox can get a better read on him entering the offseason. His only career win came against the Orioles, when he scattered two hits and one earned run over five innings on May 7.
BAL: LHP Adam Loewen (5-5, 5.32 ERA)
Over his last seven starts, Loewen has had one poor outing, and it was against Boston. In that start at Fenway Park, Loewen lasted just 2 1/3 innings, giving up six runs and six hits. In the other six starts during that span, Loewen has yielded less than three runs in each of them. Loewen is 2-2 in nine home starts this year with a 3.76 ERA at Camden Yards.
Player to watch
Melvin Mora is 4-for-7 lifetime against DiNardo.
