Red Sox at the plate: Eric Hinske's grand slam powered a five-run first inning before J.D. Drew doubled in Alex Cora in the second. Joe McEwing scored the eventual deciding run on a fielder's choice in the sixth.

Tigers at the plate: Magglio Ordonez singled in a pair of runs in the opening inning before a Josh Beckett curveball hit him in the head, knocking him out of the game. Gary Sheffield and Placido Polanco each scored twice.

Red Sox on the mound: Beckett didn't give up an extra-base hit in his three innings, but two errors and two hit batters helped make for a long day for him with five runs, two earned, allowed over three innings. Hideki Okajima followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

Tigers on the mound: Justin Verlander struggled with his command from the outset, giving up two hits and two walks before serving up Hinske's grand slam. Verlander ended up with six runs allowed over two innings. After Edward Campusano tossed two scoreless innings, Todd Jones entered and was soon ejected for throwing twice inside on Drew.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox, 6-5; Tigers, 6-4-1.

Up next: The Tigers have their first split-squad day of the spring Sunday, sending Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Curtis Granderson and others to Clearwater with starter Chad Durbin to face the Phillies while Mike Maroth, Ivan Rodriguez, Sean Casey and the rest stay in Lakeland to take on the Mets. Both games start at 1:05 p.m. ET.

Daisuke Matsuzaka takes the mound for his second start of the spring as the Red Sox return home Sunday afternoon, hosting the Orioles at 1:05 p.m. ET at City of Palms Park. Joel Pineiro also is scheduled to pitch.
