Red Sox on the mound:
Beckett didn't give up an extra-base hit in his three innings, but two errors and two hit batters helped make for a long day for him with five runs, two earned, allowed over three innings. Hideki Okajima followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball.
Tigers on the mound:
Justin Verlander struggled with his command from the outset, giving up two hits and two walks before serving up Hinske's grand slam. Verlander ended up with six runs allowed over two innings. After Edward Campusano tossed two scoreless innings, Todd Jones entered and was soon ejected for throwing twice inside on Drew.
