at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Sunday, March 18

Red Sox at the plate: Utilityman Joe McEwing got Boston's first hit with a double to right field in the fifth inning. One batter later, McEwing scored his team's first run on a double by Alberto Castillo to the gap in right-center. McEwing delivered another hit in the sixth, and a throwing error on the play allowed another run to score.

Orioles at the plate: Shortstop Miguel Tejada doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a single by first baseman Aubrey Huff. Third baseman Melvin Mora had the team's only other hit in the first five innings.

Red Sox on the mound: Southpaw Kason Gabbard held the Orioles scoreless through three innings. Gabbard struck out two batters and gave up one hit. Bryan Corey threw one inning and allowed one earned run. Veteran reliever Julian Tavarez, a candidate in the crowded field to serve as Boston's closer, threw three scoreless innings.

Orioles on the mound: Daniel Cabrera pitched five innings of one-run baseball, but he began to get wild late in his stint. The right-hander didn't allow any hits until the fifth inning, but he walked three batters in the early going. Cabrera gave up two doubles and walked two more batters in the fifth, but he escaped on a fly ball to left field.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 8-10; Orioles 9-8.

Coming up: The Orioles will have their only off-day of the spring Monday and will return to action with their first night game on Tuesday at 7:10 ET. Jaret Wright will get the ball, and he'll be matched against the Mets' Mike Pelfrey. The Red Sox also have an off-day Monday and will return to play Minnesota on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Josh Beckett will start that game.
