Wakefield finishes spring season in loss

Red Sox at the plate: David Ortiz went 1-for-3 with an RBI single. Julio Lugo had a hit, a run and a stolen base.

Pirates at the plate: Ronny Paulino belted a two-run homer in the top of the first. Andrew McCutchen added an RBI single in the second.

Red Sox on the mound: Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield got in his final tuneup of the exhibition season, scattering six hits and three runs over six innings. Wakefield walked one and struck out five. Brendan Donnelly fired a scoreless seventh inning.

Pirates on the mound: Former Boston prospect Tony Armas scattered five hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings, striking out six. Another former Red Sox pitcher also got some work in, as John Wasdin fired 2 1/3 innings and didn't allow a hit.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 12-12-3; Pirates 11-15-2.

Up next: Curt Schilling makes his final Spring Training start on Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium against the Twins. Minnesota counters with Johan Santana. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. The Pirates travel to Sarasota to face the Reds with Zach Duke pitching against Aaron Harang.
