After an ugly 6-1 loss to the Padres on Saturday night, Beckett's next turn in the rotation could not come at a better time. The righty fired six shutout innings against the Braves in his last start.
The Red Sox are 3-2 with four games to go in this nine-game road trip.
In the first two games of the series, the Red Sox have found PETCO to be a tough hitter's park, scoring a total of three runs. On one hand, the ball carries better in day games at PETCO. On the other hand, they are facing Peavy.
"It's not a fun yard to hit at," Pedroia said. "We have to find a way to win the series. Come out Sunday and play well."
The Red Sox are 11-6 in Interleague Play.
BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (10-1, 3.14 ERA)
Beckett moves up a day -- although he'll still be on regular four days' rest -- because Curt Schilling went on the disabled list due to an ailing right shoulder. Beckett is having an outstanding season -- only one of his 13 starts has been subpar. The right-hander rebounded nicely from his first loss by firing six shutout innings in his last start against the Braves. Beckett is 5-0 with a 1.59 ERA on the road this season. He's 4-1 with a 2.14 ERA career against the Padres, and opponents are hitting .224 against him this season.
SD: RHP Jake Peavy (9-1, 1.98 ERA)
Player to watch
Peavy picked up his ninth victory of the season on June 19. Peavy allowed three runs on six hits over six innings while striking out seven. It wasn't his sharpest outing of the season, but the Padres' offense provided plenty of support in the win. His ERA is now 1.98 and his nine wins tie him with Brad Penny and Cole Hamels for most wins in the National League.
Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is 4-for-8 lifetime against Peavy with two homers and three RBIs.
