The rookie right-hander was brilliant in his only appearance in Seattle, working eight innings on June 27, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out eight and walking only one batter. Despite the solid performance, Matsuzaka came away with a no-decision in the game as the Red Sox lost, 2-1, in 11 innings.
Matsuzaka has appeared in three games against the Mariners this season. He's 0-1 with a 4.95 ERA allowing 11 earned runs in 20 innings pitched.
Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is convinced the Boston losing streak at Safeco Field is nothing more then a little bad fortune.
"I think it's a little bit of a fluke thing. Some places you play really good and some places you don't," Lowell said. "The nine [losses are] over two years, so if it was nine in a row in nine straight days, I'd start worrying."
Lowell did point to the Seattle bullpen as one of the main reasons the Sox have struggled in Seattle.
"They've pitched good against us all year," he said. "Their numbers are good, it's not a fluke thing. That's definitely one of their strengths."
The numbers agree with Lowell's assessment. The Mariners' bullpen has worked 17 2/3 innings against the Red Sox in Seattle this season and allowed just three runs on nine hits for a 1.53 ERA.
The Red Sox haven't won in Seattle since July 21, 2006.Pitching matchup
