In Saturday's 6-2 win over the Orioles, the Red Sox displayed the depth they'll need to use in the season's final two months. It's why they come into Sunday's series finale having split the first two games of the series instead of losing two.
The Red Sox got a total of five hits from their seventh and ninth hitters and used two relievers in the ninth to finish the game after starter Josh Beckett dominated through 8 2/3 innings. Even though Boston held a four-run lead, Baltimore had the tying run in the on-deck circle, and closer Jonathan Papelbon came on for a save.
Boston has as much depth as any team in baseball -- both on the bench and in the bullpen. The Red Sox can sit more than one key hitter in a game and still win, and with the recent acquisition of Eric Gagne, they can even give Papelbon some down time if need be.
The Red Sox also used that depth to help while starter Curt Schilling was out. The right-hander will be making his second start after time on the disabled list, again showing how much depth Boston truly has this season. The loss of a key starter could cripple some teams, but the Red Sox didn't miss a beat.
BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (6-5, 4.31 ERA)
Schilling has gone 5-1 in his last eight starts against the Orioles.
BAL: RHP Steve Trachsel (5-7, 4.88 ERA)
Trachsel had a brief stint on the disabled list and hasn't won a game in more than two months.
