Opener with White Sox washed away

CHICAGO -- The Red Sox and White Sox waited for a window of dryness that never came before Thursday night's game was finally cancelled following a delay of about two and a half hours.

The teams will now play a day-night doubleheader on Friday, with Game 1 scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET and the nightcap at 8:11 p.m.

However, the forecast, which on Thursday featured downpouring rain along with thunder and lightning, is again ominous on Friday. In other words, there could be more delays or postponements in store.

If there is a doubleheader on Friday, the Red Sox will keep their pitchers in order, with Josh Beckett getting the nod in the opener and Curt Schilling taking the ball in Game 2.

The White Sox will flip-flop, as Jon Garland will face Beckett and John Danks, who was supposed to start Thursday night, will go in the nightcap.

The Red Sox are hopeful that Friday's doubleheader can be played so that their pitching rotation for the upcoming three-game series against the Yankees in New York next week can remain intact.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to pitch the Tuesday opener of that series, followed by Beckett on Wednesday and Schilling on Thursday.

Fans should retain their tickets and parking for Thursday's postponed contest and use them for Friday's first game, or fans may also exchange Thursday's tickets for upper level tickets to any remaining White Sox home date (subject to availability).

Fans may exchange tickets to Thursday's game at the U.S. Cellular Field Box Office or by mail at the White Sox Box Office, U.S. Cellular Field, 333 W. 35th Street, Chicago, Ill., 60616. Exchanges will begin immediately.
