The first day of September callups couldn't come at a better time for Boston, which will use one of them to start Saturday night. Right-hander Clay Buchholz will make his second career start against Baltimore lefty Garrett Olson.
Other callups expected to be in uniform Saturday are outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Brandon Moss, infielder Royce Clayton and righty reliever Bryan Corey.
BOS: RHP Clay Buchholz (1-0, 4.50 ERA)
With the rotation shifting a day forward to compensate for Tim Wakefield's sore back, Buchholz fills in, the earliest beneficiary of the Sept. 1 roster expansion. The rookie is no ordinary placeholder. The team's top pitching prospect, Buchholz will be making his second career Major League start. On Aug. 17, he held the Angels to three earned runs in six innings of work, notching the win.
BAL: LHP Garrett Olson (1-2, 7.33 ERA)
Olson was skipped in his last start and optioned to Class A Bluefield with the design that he could come back when that affilate's season ended. He got back into the rotation by virtue of an injury to staff ace Erik Bedard, who's nursing an oblique injury.
