Red Sox Short Hops: Game 1

BOSTON -- Fielding the Red Sox's 4-0 Game 1 victory over the Angels on a short hop ...

In < 25 words...
Everything worked. Josh Beckett dominated, he got sparkling defense from Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp, as well as homers from Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz.

Frozen moment
Beckett gave up a leadoff single to Chone Figgins in the first. Figgins advanced to third with two outs before Beckett struck out Garret Anderson. The Red Sox right-hander then went on a roll.

Big number
After giving up a hit to the first batter of the game, Beckett retired the next 19 hitters he faced before Vladimir Guerrero finally broke the spell with a one-out single in the seventh.

Game ball
Kevin Youkilis

Hit his first postseason home run in the first inning to put the Red Sox up, 1-0.

David Ortiz

Hit his ninth career postseason home run with a runner aboard in the third to put the Red Sox up, 3-0.

Josh Beckett

Went the distance Wednesday, allowing just four hits while striking out eight Angels without walking a batter.

Sense of October
October at Fenway Park is the personification of postseason baseball. Yawkey Way was packed before the game, complete with all the great noises and smells everyone associates with a ballpark. Once Youkilis unloaded to put the Red Sox up, the place went crazy.

Josh Beckett: Threw all of his pitches for strikes and had electric stuff.

Drew
Spoken
"He threw the ball great. It's one of those dominating performances you don't see too often. He came out, the first batter after they got that first hit, he was virtually unhittable." -- J.D. Drew on Beckett
Next step
After taking the first game in dominant fashion, the Red Sox can put the Angels in a bad place with a win Friday night. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his Major League postseason debut and his first career start against the Angels. Based on Dice-K's success against opposing teams the first time he faces them, the Angels must overcome a great deal.
