Red Sox at the plate: The Red Sox struggled to get any offense in the early innings, but they scratched together three hits and a sacrifice fly in their two-run fifth inning. Jed Lowrie and Kevin Youkilis singled to start the rally, then Mike Lowell sent the first run home on a sacrifice fly before left fielder Brandon Moss followed with a single.

Orioles at the plate: Baltimore broke out for a five-run rally with two outs in the third inning. Brian Roberts drew a walk and scored on a double by Melvin Mora. Nick Markakis and Kevin Millar added run-scoring singles off Boston's Julian Tavarez, and designated hitter Aubrey Huff drilled a two-run homer over the right-field bleachers off Kyle Snyder.

Red Sox on the mound: Tavarez held his own until the third inning, when Baltimore's bats caught up to him. The right-hander left with two outs in that rally, having allowed four hits and four earned runs. Snyder relieved him and got through the fourth and fifth unscathed before the Orioles blitzed him for four hits and four runs in the sixth.

Orioles on the mound: Jeremy Guthrie pitched three scoreless innings for the Orioles and allowed only three Red Sox to reach base. Guthrie walked one batter and gave up two hits. Reliever Jamie Walker pitched one scoreless inning and Radhames Liz threw two, but Chad Bradford gave up three hits and two runs in his only inning of work.

Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 3-6; Orioles 5-3;
