The pitch by Rangers right-hander Kevin Millwood might have been a tad low or outside, but it didn't seem to be all that controversial a call by home-plate umpire Paul Emmel.
Ramirez disagreed and said something to Emmel that was strong enough to get him immediately thrown out of the game. It was the fourth ejection of Ramirez's career and first since Aug. 6, 2007.
The early exit put at least a one-day halt on Ramirez's quest for 500 homers. The left fielder is four away from the hallowed mark after belting a game-winning shot on Saturday night.
Interestingly, Red Sox manager Terry Francona revealed before Sunday's game that he was contemplating giving Ramirez an off-day on Monday, when the Sox complete this four-game series against the Rangers.
It remains to be seen if Sunday's short day will impact that decision.
