Red Sox announce July as "Acts of Kindness" month

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation today announced that July is “Acts of Kindness” month, when the team and its philanthropic arm will embark on a month-long series of charitable initiatives as part of the “100 Acts of Kindness.” The program recognizes and supports the work of charitable organizations throughout New England during Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary season. Through volunteer service and donations, the two organizations will look to complete a total of 26 acts by the end of the month.

Charitable institutions that will be recognized throughout the month include Save a Dog in Sudbury, MA; the Adult Day Center of Westerly, RI; My Brothers Table in Lynn, MA; Friends Way in Warwick, RI; Wild Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Program in Berkeley, MA; The Greater Boston Food Bank, Boys & Girls Club of the Penobscot Nation in Indian Island, ME; Room to Grow in Boston, MA; Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports in Killington, VT; Pease Greeters in Portsmouth, NH; The DREAM Program in Somerville, MA; Lindos Sueños in Boston and the Dominican Republic; and Cor Unum Meal Center in South Lawrence, MA. The Red Sox will also give complimentary tours of Fenway Park to uniformed military personnel on Wednesday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. while many crew members are in town for U.S. Navy Week in Boston.

Additionally, monetary donations will be made to Birthday Wishes, an organization that organizes birthday parties for thousands of homeless children every year; ROCA, an organization based in Chelsea, MA, that helps alter the life trajectories of some of society's high-risk young people; and the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program, which pairs Boston teens with jobs at Boston’s top corporations during the summer. Check presentations for these organizations will be made at Fenway Park before a game this month. A complete list of confirmed acts for the month of July is attached.

Beyond these Acts of Kindness, the Red Sox and Red Sox Foundation will work with Covidien, the Mansfield-based medical device company, and Red Sox Foundation partner, to host a series of community service days around New England, engaging Red Sox fans and Covidien employees. More information about these events, and other acts as they are scheduled, will be available later in July.

With the completion of the July Acts of Kindness, the number of special recipients of the “100 Acts of Kindness” will total 57 by the end of the month, with a final goal of completing 100 by the end of 2012.

About the 100 Acts of Kindness: As a way to highlight and support the important work done by the many charitable institutions throughout New England and beyond, the Red Sox are engaging in “100 Acts of Kindness” with various not-for-profit organizations during the 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park in 2012. These acts will take on a number of different forms, including donations, volunteer efforts, and hosting community events. Each act will be designed to highlight organizations and causes throughout New England. Red Sox ownership, players, alumni, and staff will participate. Additional acts will be announced throughout 2012, culminating with 100 by the end of this 100th Anniversary year.
