BOSTON -- The Red Sox played down a man in Friday night's 6-5 loss to the Twins.
Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was not with the team because of an ear infection. He was not in the hospital, but did have a fever, manager Bobby Valentine said.
"Salty wasn't here," Valentine said. "He has a little ear infection, or a big ear infection."
Valentine said he hoped Saltalamacchia would be back for Saturday, but gave no guarantee. Ryan Lavarnway's recent call-up gives the Red Sox three catchers, so they would not have been in a bind had Friday's game continued.
