Atchison's first rehab outing goes smoothly

SEATTLE -- Red Sox reliever Scott Atchison made the first appearance of his rehab assignment on Monday with Triple-A Pawtucket, throwing a quick and clean eight-pitch inning.

"Looked like he attacked the strike zone, had movement, got quick outs -- sounded like Atch to me," manager Bobby Valentine said. "Afterward, he had no pain. I'm glad that it looks like he's able to pitch."

Atchison is on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury and hasn't pitched in the Majors since July 13. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 37 games this season.
