TORONTO -- Right-hander Chris Carpenter picked up his first career win after recording two outs in the eighth inning of Friday's 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays.

It was Carpenter's fourth appearance with Boston after spending a majority of his year in the Minor Leagues, most recently at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he posted a 1.15 ERA over 16 relief appearances while holding opponents to a .137 batting average.

Carpenter has worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings with Boston since joining the team as a September callup.

"He has pitched very well since he has been here. I have been impressed with his velocity and his breaking ball," manager Bobby Valentine said.

Carpenter, who was acquired from the Cubs in the offseason as part of the compensation package for former general manager Theo Epstein, has been known to run his fastball up to triple digits and has been averaging 94.4 mph -- according to Fangraphs.com -- over his brief stint with the Red Sox.

Valentine likes Carpenter's composure on the mound, saying he has done a good job at bouncing back after falling behind in counts. His control hasn't been the sharpest, as he has issued one walk in each appearance, but Valentine isn't concerned.

"Right now, he seems very good. There is nothing not to like so far," Valentine said.
