Red Sox to Augment their sports medicine service

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced that they will augment their Sports Medicine Service for 2013.  Laurence J. Ronan, MD was named Medical Director, and Dan Dyrek, PT, DPT, was named Coordinator, Sports Medicine Service.  Pete Asnis, MD, will continue as Head Team Orthopedist.  The announcements, made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington, continue a restructuring that began in January and introduce new philosophies of treatment for players.

 

Rick Jameyson will continue as Head Athletic Trainer, and Jim Rowe will continue as Medical Operations Coordinator.  Masai Takahashi and Brad Pearson will continue as Assistant Athletic Trainers, and Pat Sandora will continue as Major League Strength & Conditioning Coach.  Mike Boyle will continue as Strength & Conditioning Consultant, Russell Nua will continue as Massage Therapist, and Tara Mardigan will remain as Team Nutritionist.

 

Dr. Ronan, who earned degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, will continue to serve as Head Team Internist, as he has since 2005.  A Staff Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, he also serves as Senior Advisor to the Center for the Medical Integration of Innovative Technology (CIMIT) and as Director of the Thomas S. Durant, MD, Fellowship in Refugee Medicine at MGH.  Additionally, he is a Senior Advisor to the Red Sox Foundation/Mass General Hospital Home Base Program. 

 

Dr. Dyrek, who graduated summa cum laude with a DPT from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, joined the Red Sox medical staff as a clinical consultant during the 2012 season.  He brings over 30 years of experience as a physical therapist specializing in orthopedics and has treated athletes at the professional, Olympic, international, and collegiate levels from across the country.  He has held clinical and administrative positions at two Boston teaching hospitals and for 12 years was on the faculty at the MGH Institute of Health Professionals, also serving as coordinator of the orthopaedic physical therapy curriculum. 

 

Additional physicians on the club’s medical staff include: George Theodore, MD (Team Orthopedist/Foot and Ankle Consultant), Tom Holovacs, MD (Team Orthopedist/Shoulder Consultant), Eric Berkson, MD (Team Orthopedist), Steve Southard, MD (Team Internist), Jim Januzzi, MD (Team Cardiologist) and Jeff Bostic, MD (Consultant), all from Massachusetts General Hospital; Arun Ramappa, MD (Team Orthopedist) from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; and Brian Busconi, MD (Head Minor League Physician) from UMass Memorial Medical Group.
