FORT MYERS, Fla. -- With Opening Day getting close, the Red Sox gave outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Shane Victorino precautionary days of rest on Wednesday to heal bumps and bruises.
Ellsbury jammed his right heel on Sunday, but he should return to the lineup for Thursday night's game against the Twins. Ditto for Victorino, who banged his right wrist against the wall on Sunday just moments after he moved to center to replace Ellsbury.
Victorino actually played Monday in Sarasota, but he felt some discomfort. The veteran underwent an MRI on Tuesday and it came back negative.
"He's felt some stiffness in that right wrist," said manager John Farrell. "Again, we'll give it another day. He hit in the cage earlier this morning, but just felt like where we are in the spring, we don't want to push it as much. He should be back and ready to go for the final three games here."
