As events unfold, Friday's Sox game postponed

|

BOSTON -- The Red Sox were scheduled to return to Fenway Park on Friday for the first time since Monday's deadly marathon bombings. Instead, Friday's game against the Royals was postponed, as the city was locked down until after 6 p.m. ET while authorities pursued and took into custody a suspect in the bombings.

The MBTA shut down Friday morning and remained closed late into the afternoon.

The Red Sox officially postponed the game at 3 p.m., when the team's official Twitter account posted, "OFFICIAL: Tonight's Red Sox game at Fenway Park scheduled for 7:10 pm has been postponed to support efforts of law enforcement officers."

Saturday's Red Sox game against the Royals at 1:10 p.m. ET is expected to be played as scheduled. Watch the pregame tribute at 1 p.m. that can be seen live on MLB.com and redsox.com.

The Bruins also postponed their game against the Penguins, which was scheduled for Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at TD Garden.

Clay Buchholz, who was supposed to take the mound against James Shields on Friday night, was looking forward to making the start.

"It's going to be a special game -- definitely one to remember," Buchholz said Thursday. "I'm sort of at a loss for words for it. I'm going to try to keep my emotions under wraps as much as possible. Given the circumstances, it's going to be a day that's in pursuit of recovery for everyone who had to face losses."
