BOSTON -- The Red Sox optioned reliever Daniel Bard to Double-A Portland to make room for closer Joel Hanrahan, who will likely be activated from the 15-day disabled list before Tuesday's game with Toronto.

Hanrahan (sore right hamstring) pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Pawtucket on a rehab assignment on Sunday and told the Providence Journal, "I feel like the thing that's been holding me back isn't holding me back anymore."

Bard was removed from Saturday's game after just nine pitches, when he walked two straight batters, though he said he immediately found a mechanical flaw in his arm slot that should fix the problem.
