Red Sox place Hanrahan on the DL; recall Webster

|

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today placed right-hander Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Allen Webster was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Webster is slated to start tomorrow night's game against the Twins at Fenway Park. Tomorrow night's scheduled starter, left-hander Felix Doubront, will be available in the bullpen beginning tonight.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcements.

For Hanrahan this marks his second stint on the disabled list this season after missing 15 games from April 14-29 due to a right hamstring strain. The 31-year-old has made three appearances since coming off the disabled list on April 30, allowing two runs over 2.2 innings of work. He collected his 100th career save with a scoreless ninth inning in Toronto on May 2. Hanrahan is 0-1 with four saves, a 9.82 ERA (8 ER/7.1 IP), and five strikeouts over nine relief outings for the Red Sox overall in 2013, his first season with the club.

Webster, 23, made his major league debut in a start for the Red Sox in the second game of a doubleheader against the Royals on April 21. He yielded three runs (2 ER) and recorded five strikeouts over 6.0 innings in that start but did not factor in the club's 5-4, 10-inning loss after leaving in line for the win. Webster is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA (6 ER/20.0 IP) in four starts for the PawSox this year, compiling 26 strikeouts compared to six walks while holding opponents to a .171 average (12-for-70).
