The 35-year-old veteran, who underwent right hip surgery during the offseason, is batting .288 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in 65 games this season.
"We sat down with Mike [on Saturday] night during batting practice and agreed that another day would be good for him with the day off [Monday]," manager Terry Francona said. "He's OK. He's just a little beat up.
"He's played a lot, and that's my fault. We need to keep an eye on that going forward."
Mark Kotsay started at first base for Boston, with Kevin Youkilis moving across the diamond to third.
