Sox to honor former manager Morgan on Tuesday

BOSTON -- The Red Sox will pay tribute to former manager Joe Morgan, who pioneered one of the most memorable runs in team history, before Tuesday night's game against the Rays.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of "Morgan Magic," when the Sox rolled off 12 wins in a row following the All-Star break and 19 out of 20 at Fenway Park.

Morgan was named the team's interim manager on July 14, 1988, replacing John McNamara.

That interim label was shed in short order, as Morgan, a native of Walpole, Mass., would manage the club through the 1991 season, guiding his hometown team to a pair of American League East titles.

Morgan will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Several members of the '88 team are expected to attend, including Roger Clemens, Dwight Evans, Lee Smith, Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, Mike Smithson, Tom Bolton and Spike Owen.

Ceremonies are expected to start at about 6:45 p.m. ET. The first pitch of Tuesday night's game is 7:10.
