"You can't leave the dugout," Francona said. "That's like an automatic [suspension]. I knew that was going to happen. I was surprised he got thrown out. But I knew, as soon as you leave the dugout, it's an automatic suspension."
It was home-plate umpire Bob Davidson who ejected Magadan.
"I thought Bob put Mags in a horrible position," Francona said. "He's screaming over there, cursing at him. On a pitch that he admittedly [messed] up, that's a little [unfair]."
The Red Sox utilized staff assistant Alex Ochoa as their hitting coach on Friday. Magadan was around during the pregame hours and into batting practice, but he was required to leave before the start of the game.
