Red Sox get Hulett in trade with Royals

The Red Sox acquired Tug Hulett in a trade with the Royals on Wednesday, picking up the 26-year-old infielder for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The Royals designated Hulett for assignment Friday, which meant he'd need to be traded, released or sent to the Minors within 10 days.

Claimed off waivers from the Mariners in February, Hulett hit .111 in 15 games for the Royals. He hit .291 with 11 homers, 53 RBIs and 27 doubles for Triple-A Omaha in 2009, his sixth season in the Minors.

Hulett represented the U.S. in the Baseball World Cup in August, hitting a home run in the gold-medal victory over Cuba.

The Royals also placed right-handed pitcher Julio Pimentel on waivers for the purposes of his unconditional release. He is now a free agent.
