CLEVELAND -- Red Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was ejected from Wednesday night's game against the Indians after a brief verbal exchange with home-plate umpire Quinn Wolcott in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After a walk by Asdrubal Cabrera, Pierzynski asked Wolcott for a new baseball.

Almost immediately after, Pierzynski received his ninth career ejection, this one over a dispute about balls and strikes

"I don't know. It happens," said Pierzynski. "Just the timing was rather odd. But you know, whatever. Stuff happens out there.

"I've been kicked out a couple times in my career. I remember getting kicked out last year in a no-hitter. Stuff happens."

David Ross came on to catch for the Red Sox in an eventual 7-4, 12-inning Boston loss.
