BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano was designated for assignment. Buchholz will start tonight's series finale against the Seattle Mariners at 10:10 p.m. (ET) at Safeco Field.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Buchholz, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 28 (retroactive to May 27) with a hyperextended left knee, last appeared for Boston on May 26 at Atlanta. The 29-year-old made two rehab starts for Triple-A Pawtucket going 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA (3 ER/10.2 IP), two walks, and 10 strikeouts. In his final rehab start on June 19, Buchholz threw 6.0 scoreless innings against Minnesota's Rochester affiliate, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five. In 10 starts for the Red Sox this season, Buchholz is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA (39 ER/50.0 IP). Selected in the supplemental round (42nd overall) of the 2005 June Draft, Buchholz, a two-time American League All-Star, owns a career record of 60-37 with a 3.82 ERA (337 ER/794.2 IP) and 606 strikeouts in 133 major league games (131 starts).

Capuano, 35, was 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA (16 ER/31.2 IP), 15 walks, and 29 strikeouts in 28 relief appearances for Boston this year, his first year in the AL. He did not allow a run over his first 12 appearances of the season for a 15.0-inning scoreless streak which was the longest streak for a pitcher to begin his career with the club since 2009. Signed by the Red Sox as a free agent on February 22 of this year, he made Boston's Opening Day roster out of spring training. For his major league career, Capuano has gone 74-84 with a 4.28 ERA (618 ER/1299.1 IP), 407 walks, and 1,079 strikeouts in 266 games (209 starts) for the Diamondbacks (2003), Brewers (2004-07; 2010), Mets (2011), Dodgers (2012-13), and Red Sox (2014).
