BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today activated first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Jonathan Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Carp will be active for tonight's 7:10 p.m. game at Fenway Park against the Chicago White Sox.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Carp, 28, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fourth metatarsal fracture of his right foot on June 2 (retroactive to June 1). In a seven-game rehabilitation assignment, all with Pawtucket, Carp went 5-for-21 (.238) with a double, home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. In parts of six big league seasons with the Mariners (2009-12) and Red Sox (2013-14), Carp has hit .262 (218-for-831) with 51 doubles, four triples, 27 home runs, 120 RBI, 81 walks, and 94 runs scored over 292 games.

Herrera, 29, has played in 42 games this season, his first with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies in December 2013. The switch-hitter has batted .233 (21-for-90) with one double, two triples, nine RBI, seven walks, 10 runs scored, one stolen base, and three sacrifice hits, while appearing defensively at shortstop (16 games, 13 starts), third base (14 games, 8 starts), second base (9 games, 3 starts), and first base (1 game). In 417 major league games over parts of six seasons with the Rockies (2008, 2010-13) and Red Sox (2014), Herrera has hit .263 (282-for-1,074) with 29 doubles, nine triples, eight home runs, 75 RBI, 94 walks, and 122 runs scored.
