Red Sox make most of hits vs. Pirates

at Fort Myers, Fla.
Saturday, March 13

Pirates at the plate: Delwyn Young hit a solo shot, his second home run of the spring, in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie. Steve Pearce nearly hit one out in the eighth, but settled for an RBI double off the wall.

Red Sox at the plate: The Red Sox's bats were kept silent until the seventh inning, managing just two hits, singles by Victor Martinez and Adrian Beltre, for the game, until Mike Cameron doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. An infield single by Jose Iglesias moved pinch-runner Darnell McDonald to third, Ryan Kalish walked and Tug Hulett singled in a pair to give the Red Sox the lead.

Pirates on the mound: Paul Maholm went three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out three, a nice improvement from his two-inning, two-run performance in his last start.

Red Sox on the mound: Starter Clay Buchholz was sharp, allowing just one hit and one walk over his three innings of work. He struck out two. Closer Jonathan Papelbon followed him with a perfect inning.

Worth noting: The Red Sox had an unofficial doubleheader on Sunday. About a half-hour after the completion of the main Grapefruit League contest, they were to hold an intrasquad "B" game on the main field, mainly to allow pitchers to make up for lost time due to Friday's rainout. Hideki Okajima, Daniel Bard, Casey Kelly, Ramon Ramirez, Robert Manuel, Kyle Weiland and Kris Johnson were scheduled to get some work in. Fans were invited to stay to watch game.

Grapefruit League records: Pirates 3-7; Red Sox 7-3

Up next: The Pirates host the World Series champion New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ET on MLB.TV. Charlie Morton will get the start against CC Sabathia. Vinnie Chulk, initially supposed to pitch on Friday, will throw, as well. The Pirates will also have a "B" game against the Orioles at Pirate City. Brad Lincoln will get the start in that contest.

The Red Sox head over to Hammond County Stadium to face the Twins at 1:05 p.m. on MLB.TV. Josh Beckett will make his third start of the spring. The right-hander has allowed just one run on two hits and no walks while striking out four over five innings. Minnesota will send Kevin Slowey to the mound.
