Blue Jays at the plate: Minor Leaguer Brad Emaus swung a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Randy Ruiz, a leading candidate to win a bench spot, added two hits.
Red Sox at the plate: Jason Varitek and Josh Reddick had the only hits through eight innings before a three-run ninth, in which David Ortiz, Dusty Brown and Tug Hulett had RBI singles.
Worth noting: Red Sox corner infielder Mike Lowell had to leave the game in the bottom of the first inning after suffering a left knee contusion. Lowell fouled a ball off his knee.
Grapefruit League records: Red Sox 12-12; Blue Jays 9-10.
Up next: Brian Tallett, the front-runner to be Toronto's fifth starter, will pitch on Saturday in Bradenton, Fla., against the Pirates. The game starts at 1:05 p.m. ET.
Right-hander John Lackey will take the ball for the Red Sox on Saturday in Sarasota, Fla., against the Orioles in a game that starts at 1:05 p.m. ET. Lefty Alan Embree will pitch for Boston for the first time since 2005. Signed last week, Embree worked in a Minor League game earlier this week. Second baseman Dustin Pedroia will play for the first time since straining his left wrist on Tuesday.
