NEW YORK -- While the Red Sox have showcased several of their prospects at the Major League level in recent weeks, it appears lefty Henry Owens won't make his debut until next season at the earliest.

"I think it's unlikely," said general manager Ben Cherington, when asked if the club's No. 2 prospect would surface in Boston before season's end. "Given where we are in his calendar and where we are as a team ... Look, if you're in a position where you have a chance to get into October or win a game in October, then you put the best 25 guys on the field, whoever they are, with less concern for managing the roster in the offseason."

I think he goes into next Spring Training in a solid position along with a number of other young starters who will be competing next spring. I'm not sure, weighing all the factors, if it makes sense to pull him up in September. He's had a good full season, so we'll probably just look to get him in a good offseason program and look forward to seeing him in Spring Training."

After going 14-4 with a 2.60 ERA at Double-A Portland, Owens was 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA in six starts at Triple-A Pawtucket. He will pitch for Pawtucket in the playoffs later this week.
